Hon’ble FM underlined the focus-groups of her Government as GARIB (Garib Kalyan, Desh-ka-Kalyan), YOUTH (Empowering-the-Youth), ANNADATA (Welfare-of-Farmers) and WOMEN (Nari-Shakti).

Taking cue from Hon’ble Prime Minister’s slogan of “Jai Anusandhan” (Victory-to-Innovation), FM emphatically announced establishment of a corpus of INR 1 lakh crore for providing long-term financing to “tech-savvy youth” perpetually hungry for low-interest capital to fund their ambitious R&D needs.  

Betting on a growth-trajectory of appx. 7% increase in GDP, and surging desire among foreign investors to enter lucrative Indian markets, she alluded that India is now confidently poised than ever before to reconsider bilateral investment treaties seeking “Foreign Direct Investment” on the prioritized-principle of “First Develop India”.  

On the tax front, whether direct or indirect, no changes in law, rate or duty-structure have been proposed.  Status quo has been maintained, as is usually expected from a ‘Vote-on-Account’.  However, on the fringes, marginal extensions by an additional year (i.e. commencement up until March 31, 2025) are proposed in respect of sun-set clauses as they apply to certain specified-units commencing operations in the GIFT city, and also in relation to incorporation of companies qualifying as eligible start-ups.  TCS provisions have been tweaked. In a gesture of generosity, it has been proposed that the Government will write-off arrears of income-tax upto a ceiling-limit of INR 10,000 or INR 25,000 pertaining to specified historical assessment years, which would potentially allow relief and bury litigation across 10 million small taxpayers.  

Overall, the mood of the Government sounded confident and upbeat. India’s growth-story is turning out to be real.

The survey has been carried out by market research firm YouGov’s India panel drawing responses from 2033 participants (across India). 59 percent of the respondents expressed a strong likelihood of considering a vegan diet in the near future, clearly demonstrating that India’s majority has voted for Vegan.

As Veganuary, the global charity which has inspired millions to try vegan, launches its main campaign, the survey points to a busy January 2024 as a record-breaking number of people are poised to participate.  

Furthermore, 74 percent of respondents believe that a vegan diet is good for overall health, 73 percent feel it helps stop animal exploitation, 72 percent believe it is good for the environment, and 62 percent feel it is an easy lifestyle to maintain. 

Busting popular myths that a vegan diet is difficult to sustain, 61 percent of respondents think a vegan diet has enough food choices to explore, and 55 percent say it does not compromise on taste. 

The survey further brought to the fore interesting insights into the changing dietary patterns of the Indian population revealing a significant inclination towards a vegan lifestyle. 

Sharing his thoughts on the survey Mr. Prashanth Vishwanath, Country Director, Veganuary India, said, “The reasons for a vegan diet being popular among Indian youth are interesting. While 6 out of 10 people attribute it to increased health consciousness, specific reasons such as achieving an ideal bodyweight are more among flexitarians. This shows that a vegan diet is for everyone, regardless of age, gender, motivation and previous diets. The Indian public has voted for change, and helped by Veganuary’s range of free resources and guidance, they can exercise their choice to transition into a healthier plant-based lifestyle.”

Significantly, nearly 70% of respondents believe that India’s rich tradition of vegetarianism could be instrumental in propelling the success of veganism. Flexitarians emphasize the ease of integrating veganism into traditional Indian recipes as another influential factor.

Close to 60 percent people perceive improvement in gut health as one of the top health benefits provided by a vegan diet. A higher number of vegans & vegetarians also think that it helps improve mood.

Veganuary’s own participant surveys support these perceptions. Forty-nine percent of Veganuary 2023 participants surveyed reported improvements to their mood, and 47% of respondents reported improvements to their overall health.**

The findings of the YouGov survey reveal growing awareness of health, cultural heritage, and environmental considerations shaping dietary choices in the country.

Currently, there are 11 approved Bitcoin ETFs, with a total assets under management (AUM) of $27.2 billion. The top three in market capitalization are GBTC, IBIT, and FBTC, respectively. It is foreseeable that there will be intense competition for market share among issued ETFs, with only 2-3 ETFs likely to remain in the end.

Dumping & Dumping – Grayscale BTC Outflow

Although Grayscale is the most experienced management company for spot BTC, its ETF has encountered significant sell-offs after issuance. The main reason for the sell-off is its management fee (1.5%), which is much higher than other ETFs. Due to differences in settlement mechanisms, the sell-off of Grayscale ETF shares results in the immediate sale of BTC on the secondary market, while inflows from other ETFs are recorded with custody institutions like Coinbase and do not immediately translate into secondary market purchases. This has led to significant selling pressure on BTC in the recent period.

It can also be observed that the capacity of other ETFs to absorb the outflow of GBTC shares is gradually decreasing, with net outflows in the last four trading days.

Although Grayscale’s BTC holdings have decreased from a peak of 600,000 coins to around 500,000 coins, and the selling pressure is gradually diminishing, it is expected that selling pressure from Grayscale will persist. The final holding range is estimated to be around 40-50% of the peak, with approximately 200,000 to 250,000 BTC yet to be sold. At the current average rate of 10,000 coins per day, the market is expected to experience around 20 days of “Grayscale pressure.”

Macro Data Spotlight – Strong Stablecoin Inflows

The netflow of USDC and USDT are important indicators at the macro level reflecting bull and bear markets. Currently, the market has experienced four consecutive months of net inflows, stepping out of the bear market territory marked by net outflows. However, the inflow volume has not yet reached the peak levels seen in a bullish market. Overall, market sentiment has completed the transition from bear to bull, and the influx of funds exhibits characteristics typical of the early stages of a bull market.

Positive fund inflows have also reversed the previous situation of a stock game, with currencies other than Bitcoin (altcoins) receiving more capital injection.

Macro Data Spotlight – Cooling Down On BTC Rally 

After the approval of the ETF, BTC did not experience a faster price surge. On the contrary, due to the speculative narrative around the BTC ETF, the price had been pushed from around $20,000 in August of the previous year to a peak of about $49,000 when the ETF was approved. When the ETF was actually approved, what we witnessed was more of a “Sale-the-News” phenomenon and short-term profit-taking. BTC has entered a period of adjustment, which is expected to continue into February. However, because of favorable market sentiment, the price correction may not be significant, and there might be more of a range-bound movement.

Also, currently BTC’s perpetual contract Open Interest remains at a high level (~$17 billion), which means the market leverage is still relatively high. This may hinder significant upward price movements. It is necessary for a retracement to a relatively healthy level (in the range of $13 billion to $16 billion) to gather strength for the next strong upward movement.

What Is Ahead – Ethereum Dencun Upgrade

Ethereum is set to undergo a significant upgrade called Dencun in February. This is a crucial upgrade aiming to increase data storage and reduce costs on the Ethereum network. Starting from January 17th, Ethereum began testing the Dencun upgrade on the Goerli testnet. Currently, the testnet is running smoothly, and the upcoming plans include subsequent tests on Sepolia (January 30th) and Holesky (February 7th). The implementation date for the mainnet has not been announced yet, but if everything goes smoothly, it may take place by the end of February. The Dencun upgrade will foster the prosperity of the Layer 2 ecosystem, with Layer 2 networks such as Optimism and Arbitrum expected to be the major beneficiaries. The ecosystem is likely to attract more attention and speculation as a result of this upgrade.

What Is Ahead – SEC vs. Binance & Coinbase: Ongoing Lawsuit

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed lawsuits against Coinbase and Binance in June of last year, accusing these companies of listing digital assets like Solana (SOL) and Filecoin (FIL) and claiming that these assets are essentially unregistered securities. In two hearings held in January of this year, the judge did not immediately issue a ruling but rather took the matter under careful consideration. Subsequent hearings and related rulings will be crucial and require close attention.

A significant portion of the U.S. cryptocurrency industry may depend on the outcome of the SEC’s cases against Coinbase and Binance. If federal judges acknowledge various digital assets as securities and grant the SEC the authority to determine which ones are securities, this could impose new registration and reporting requirements on issuers and trading platforms. Conversely, if judges unanimously believe that the SEC has exceeded its jurisdiction or that Congress should enact some tailored laws, it could signal a green light for the majority of businesses in the industry.

Economic Data to Watch in Feb 2024

The Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate decision on February 1st, followed by a speech from Federal Reserve Chair addressing the latest monetary policy developments. Due to the relatively weak labor market in recent times, there is an expectation for the first interest rate cut to occur in March. Additionally, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and non-farm payroll data on February 13th are also worth monitoring.
